Your Own Training Partner

Have you been watching the Olympics? I am an absolute volleyball nut - love the indoor and outdoor equally - but I have been especially moved by Misty and Kerri this year, even more than others.  Here's why.

No one has ever three-peated in beach volleyball at the Olympics, and if you have ever played beach volleyball, even on the most basic level, it is apparent why.  It takes a toll on you.  Sure you think they are all cute and fit in their bikinis but the fact is it is a very intense sport.

Second, to find a pairing that works as well as Misty and Kerri for as long as Misty and Kerri is tricky.  If you are married, you get this.

Third, it takes this kind of effort for over a decade.  Think just a minute about the training that must go in every single day to be an Olympian!  Incredible.

So why this year?  Because Kerri now has two kids.  Because Misty tore her Achilles tendon.  Because both of them are now married and there are other parts of their lives that aren't all volleyball all the time.

But this goal, this dream, this obscure thing that just couldn't be attained was worth it enough, was a strong enough goal to make them make it work.  And when it's time to train as an Olympian, do you think "I've had a long day" is a good enough excuse to give yourself?

In this writing thing, we are our own Misty and Kerri - we have to know that the other side of us is counting on us to hold up our end of the deal.  We have to know that part of us that feels guilt over not writing is the partner we are letting down.  We owe it to ourselves to put in the effort for us that we would if anyone else was counting on us.

What are you going to do TODAY to train yourself?  How do you keep yourself from from letting yourself down?

  2. What a great post, to compare their partnership to our writing. For me, my goal is to write at least one blog post/ week.

  3. There are definitely similarities between writers and athletes - both require a great deal of commitment and ability to get up after a 'fall'. Great post! :-)
